Betway slammed with record £11.6m fine

As one of the biggest names in UK online casino gaming, many new casino sites try to ape the style of Betway. Their dominance in the marketplace has been part of a deeply competitive marketplace, though some big names are threatening to pull out in the near future. However, despite the massive reputation that Betway has today, it’s fair to say that the firm has come under hot water in recent times from the UK regulatory bodies.

This has come to a head now, with the company hit with a record-breaking £11.6m fine. This was handed out to the company after they were believed to have been taking “stolen” money from VIP customers. They were also seen to be showing clear signs of gambling addiction.

Having come under major fire in the past, the UK Gambling Commission has decided to come out fighting. They believed that Betway were allowing as much as £5.8m to flow through their business, with some of that coming from money that was illegally obtained.

This is the largest fine ever seen in the UK, with the second-largest being only £7.8m. This was dished out to 888 Casino in 2017, and since then nothing of that magnitude has been offered again. While Betway could have in theory had their licensed revoked, the massive fine shows that the UKGC is serious about trying to stop such activity taking place.

For now, then, a new record has just been set for fines.
