UK gambling companies in COVID-19 warning
It’s common knowledge now that the UK Gambling Commission and the various casino sites in the country don’t exactly see eye-to-eye. This has become a recurring theme as the companies continue to argue back and forth about the entire industry. The most recent shot from the UKGC, though, has come thanks to the COVID-19 viral outbreak. They have made it clear that companies should not be using the self-isolation of Britain to try and exploit gamers and gamblers alike.
The regulatory body in the country made it clear that online operators have a duty to try and play fair. The said that those with licenses are expected to “continue to protect consumers” as the outbreak continues to spread and to worsen. The UKGC has also told all licensees that ‘social distancing’ should not encourage them to try and use online services as a conduit for their usual land betting activities.
Many people are now working from home or not working at all. The UKGC, then, has made clear that it expects the companies to be helping people avoid problem gambling. With many people looking to spend more time and funds on gaming than they might normally do, companies are expected to step up to the plate and stop that from becoming a major problem.
In a statement, the UKGC said that all online operators must “continue to act responsibly, especially in regards to individual customer affordability and increased social responsibility interactions.” With so many people “experiencing disrupted income,” online licensees are advised to “assess individual affordability on an ongoing basis.”
Let’s see how many take the hint and try to avoid excessive promotions. With the launch of some new casino sites expected even amid this crisis, there might be some further challenges and fall-outs to come.
